When managing a membership business, a SWOT analysis can come in handy. It’s a tool used to analyse a business’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. For strategy and planning purposes, it is useful to apply the SWOT framework to both your business and your competitors’ activities.
We have created a SWOT analysis template to help membership business owners improve what they do, and for future entrepreneurs to research a potential idea.

Strengths
There are undoubted advantages of your business or competitor. Find a Unique Selling Point (USP) and beneficial competencies for each. Strategic or core competencies involve the skills and resources which differentiate a firm in the market.
Weaknesses
Next, analyse the weaknesses of your business or competitor. Ponder over the improvements that both may require in each area or department. When analysing a competitor, try to find weaknesses in relation to your business's offering.
Opportunities
Your business is part of an industry. Each industry consists of current trends, future markets and developing technologies. So, determine if and how your business or competitor can capitalise on these attractive opportunities.
Threats
If your business or competitor is established in the marketplace, it does not necessarily mean that they are safe enough to become complacent. Stay aware of new and innovative entrants to the market alongside the costly impacts of changing industry regulation.
